FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Fillings

Tooth coloured fillings                                                    Traditional vs contemporary fillings

Teeth may require fillings as a result of cavities (dental caries), or other forms of injury. The dentist may have to prepare the tooth before placing the filling material

Teeth Whitening

With the appropriate agents, it is possible for the dentist to whiten your teeth. This is a safe procedure that can add to the value of your smile and confidence

Implants

Implants are the state of the art in the replacement of missing teeth. It is superior to the bridge and the denture because it does not depend on other teeth for stability and lasts very long. It has two components- (i) the implant proper which is usually made of titanium and is inserted into the bone surgically. This is the equivalent of the root of a natural tooth and (ii) the superstructure which is the crown. The crown is made 90 days after the implant surgery. Not everyone is suitable for implants (e.g. there is not enough bone, implant will be close to important structures, smokers, uncontrolled diabetic or hypertensive persons or persons with poor oral hygiene, etc).

Root Canal Treatment

This is a dental procedure that relieves pain caused by an infected or abscessed tooth. During the root canal process, the inflamed pulp is removed. The surfaces inside the tooth are then cleaned and disinfected, and a filling is placed to seal the space. The root canal procedure is completed in two or more separate visits depending on the patient’s response and the tooth protected from further damage usually with a crown.

Crowns/Bridges

Crowns are basically coverings for teeth that may be broken, discoloured or have had Root Canal Therapy. They are designed to have the same shape and colour (if a front tooth) of the original tooth. Bridges are replacement for missing teeth that are cemented in place using adjacent teeth; and will not require removal for cleaning, during meals or at night (unlike dentures).

Braces

These are used to rearrange teeth that are not in their proper positions. They are attached to the teeth for a period of time to gradually move them into the right position. This leads to a great improvement in the person’s smile, confidence and overall oral health.

Dentures

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth (unlike bridges). They are made of acrylic (plastic-like material) and would normally extend beyond the area of the missing teeth for stability. They have to be removed when eating certain foods or for cleaning as well as at bedtime
